5 ways you are using AI in your daily life

Artificial Intelligence (popularly known as AI) is a buzzword nowadays and every company is claiming that they are using AI in their products. But to the ordinary person, it still seems like a sci-fi story where robots have brains that are capable of thinking and doing things without human intervention. Well, it's quite hard to link this theoretical mindset about AI and its practical applications. The truth, however, is we encounter AI very often in our day to day life and we don't even know about that. From friend recommendations on Facebook to personal assistants on phones, Artificial Intelligence is already affecting our lives and will have even more impact in the coming years. Today, many smart devices like smartphones, PCs, speakers and smart displays come preinstalled with some kind of virtual assistant that helps you get things done with your voice or by typing in a natural language. Some examples are Apple Siri, Google Assistant, Amazon Alexa and Microsoft Cortana. AI is an important part of how these apps work because they learn from every single user interaction. This allows them to better recognize speech patterns and serve users results that are tailored to their preferences.

2. Fraud Detection

Have you ever received an email or SMS asking you if you made a specific purchase on your credit card? Many banks send these kind of communication to detect and alert against fraudulent use of banking instruments. Here again, the underlying technology has AI in its core.

3. Online Customer Support

Many websites and online shopping portals provides users the ability to chat with a customer support representative while browsing so that users can clarify any doubts or get some help choosing the product they want to buy. Not all websites have a real human on the other side and often a times you are talking to an AI-based chat bot.

4. Translator

Perhaps, one of the most interesting and useful applications of AI is the online translators. Thanks to services like Google Translate, we can now translate text from one language to another in the blink on an eye. In Google Translate, you can even translate text on a sign or menu by pointing your towards it. The app uses optical character recognition to figure out the words, and a translation system that has been trained on millions of examples of existing translations on the web.

Have you ever calculated the total time saved by using the smart reply feature in chat and email apps? These smart reply features save you time by using AI to suggest responses based on the message or mail you received. Once you’ve selected one, you can send it immediately or edit your response.
