Google Announces Android M; Aims At Improving The Basics Of Android

Following last year's release of Android Lollipop, Google has taken one step ahead by announcing the next major version of Android (dubbed as Android M) within one year of the previous release. The Android M Developer Preview was launched at Google I/O 2015 in San Francisco. Previously Android Lollipop had introduced a brand new material design and look, but this time Android M will be bringing the much-required stability and usability improvements, which might not be immediately eye-catching, but would prove to be significant long term additions. Here are the new features and changes in Android M explained.

Simplified App Permissions

App permissions have been overhauled in Android M, with users now being able to choose to accept or deny individual permissions as they see fit. Permissions will now be requested the first time you try to use a feature and not at the point of installation.

Smarter App Links

App links are being changed in Android M so that your smart phone has a greater awareness of which apps can open content directly, instead of stopping users every time with the dialog box. Suppose, you tap a Twitter link in an email, then the Twitter app will open automatically instead of asking if you want to use Twitter app to view it.

New App Drawer

The new App Drawer now scrolls vertically instead of horizontally and sports a white background. Across the top of the menu, four of the most recently used apps are shown and down the left-hand side are the letters of the alphabet.

Longer Battery Backup

Android M makes use of a new function known as Doze to improve device standby time. By using motion detectors, Android will recognize when devices haven’t been interacted with for a while, such as when a person is asleep or a device has been left aside on a table, to reduce background processes.

New Android Pay

Android Pay is a new mobile payments system designed to make checkout process faster and easier. Google is aiming to provide simplicity, security and choice with Android Pay, enabling users to use their existing credit cards to pay for products in more than 700,000 stores in the US.

And Even More

Other new features in Android M included Chrome Custom Tabs, Fingerprint Support, Auto Backup and Restore of Apps, enhanced Google Now and a handy RAM Manager.
