Hello Jakarta EE, the brand new name of Java EE

With the number of Java developers globally estimated at a whopping 14 million, it is no wonder that Java EE is a very familiar and convincing name to the developer community. But, that is changing since Oracle has donated one of its most popular product lines to the Eclipse Foundation. Long story short, the open source version of Java Enterprise Edition (JEE) has been moved to the Eclipse Foundation but Oracle's strong desire to control the 'Java' brand has made the renaming of Java EE to Jakarta EE essential.

Java EE has been the dominant enterprise Java standard for well over a decade. But, in recent years there has been some confusion and concern regarding its future. In 2017, when Oracle announced that it would give away Java EE to an open-source organization, the move was welcomed by developer community worldwide. However, many were really disappointed when they came to know that the product would be rebranded.

The biggest question regarding this rebranding is how it will affect the millions of Java developers across the world. Well, Jakarta EE is just a change in name and it is not a completely new platform. However, Eclipse Foundation has some great plans to improve the existing Java EE under the new name Jakarta EE and provide some new advanced features to developers. The vision for future of Jakarta EE includes enhanced support for microservices architecture, move to Cloud Native Java, increased pace of innovation and provide production quality reference implementations. Now what remains to be seen is how Jakarta EE will improve the existing framework and help benefit the huge number of Java developers.
